Jessica Biel White Dress Man of the Woods

Justin Timberlake's highly anticipated new album is called Man of the Woods, and, at his listening party—the American Express x Justin Timberlake Man Of The Woods Listening Experience—held in downtown Manhattan Tuesday night, the first time the album was played in full for a public audience, he was dressed the part. The 36-year-old was wearing a blue-and-black checkered flannel shirt (track No. 11 is actually titled "Flannel," by the way) and a black beanie, facial hair grown out to that "I enjoy a good craft beer!" length.

If Timberlake was anxious about having the 16 tracks from the album—which will be released on February 2, a few days before he performs at the Super Bowl halftime show—he did a skillful job at masking it. Holding court in what was referred to as a "pop-up forest" (greenery surrounded the about a hundred or so attendees at every turn, and grasshoppers and ants—covered in rose oil and black garlic—were served), Timberlake introduced the album in his trademark jovial, low-key fashion. "I'm not going to go all Ray LaMontagne on you guys," he promised, before eventually explaining he would "shut the f--k up" and let the music start. (He said that the album title was derived from the name of his son, Silas, which means "man of the woods.")

As for the music, those concerned about a full shift into a Bon Iver sound (or even just something slightly more experimental) will be relieved that the songs are, for the most part, the upbeat, pop/R&B-hybrid Timberlake-ian jams we have come to expect. ("Say Something," featuring Chris Stapleton, seemed to get the most enthusiastic reaction from the crowd, garnering a bit of applause at its finish; and one journalist may have, uh, found himself unexpectedly crooning the chorus of the track "Supplies"—"Supppliiiiiiies"—to himself on his way home later that night.)

What does one do with himself while his new album plays for a bunch of strangers—as well as assorted friends and family—for the first time? Timberlake mostly chatted with pals (the male ones were all dressed in variations of "rugged" ensembles), bobbed and danced a bit, and greeted fans and signed their vinyl records (iPhones all had to be locked up for the duration of the listening party, which provided more of a sense of being in the "outdoors" than anything about the actual décor in the space). Timberlake's wife, Jessica Biel, seemed to be in excellent spirits, dancing throughout with a group of friends, glass of white wine in hand. At several points, Biel—wearing black jeans and a black backless top (a subtle homage to "SexyBack"!??!)—moved toward Timberlake to check in, and the two would dance close and kiss and whisper, and those around them just sort of gawked. Without phones at their disposal, no one could even attempt a covert grainy shot of the famous couple. When asked by Vanity Fair if he was feeling at all nervous about people hearing the album, Timberlake brushed off any anxieties. "It's kind of like . . . eh," he said, and then swiveled into a dance move.

Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo (a.k.a "Dustin") hung out with friends just outside of the main room for most of the evening (the 15-year-old told Vanity Fair, "Yeah, Justin invited me," when asked if he was having a good time). Girls star Zosia Mamet, in a white sweater, hung out with husband Evan Jonigkeit. They were at one point overheard talking about the graphic design of one of the visuals stationed at the entrance of the venue, which seemed about right.

When the album finished playing, a few attendants weaved through the room, unlocking everyone's phones. Non-Timberlake songs made their way onto the playlist. Biel and Timberlake eventually put on what we'll call "rustic chic" patterned winter jackets and made their way out, bodyguard in tow (Biel leaned toward a group of friends shortly before leaving and shouted, "Change of plans—we're going to have everyone back at our apartment!") And then, man (and woman) of the woods were gone, on to the next venue, grasshoppers and ants left behind them.
